Someone asked me about making a guide to someone that’s new to metal, so here it is!
To start off, I just want to put a disclaimer that this is only one set of ideas on how to enter the metal culture, framed mostly by my experience. Others might have other ideas, and that’s okay.
So let’s get started!
THE MUSIC OF COURSE
When entering any world that is new and foreign to us, one of the first questions to enter our minds is, “Where do I start?” When it comes to the metal subculture, of course it’s gotta be the music! But then you look at ALL the metal music that’s out there and then you’re like, “…where do i start????/?” Well, here are a few things you can do:
Listen to your local rock station. Rock isn’t metal and vice versa, yes, but, rock stations play a nice wide range of music from different times and different subgenres. From there you can pick a few bands you like, and gauge the musical direction that you seem to prefer. From there, you can
Get on Spotify or Pandora. Listen to the bands/musicians that you liked from the radio and they’ll suggest  similar music. You’ll be able to expand your musical palette that way!
Ask your friends for suggestions! You never know what rare (or not so), unheard of gem that your friends might listen to!
Check out your local metal scene! A quick Google search can help that! For example, if you’re from Ohio, look for “Ohio local metal bands” and see what comes up!
Look at Eddie Trunk’s Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, Volumes 1 and 2. I’ve learned a lot about hard rock and heavy metal through Eddie Trunk, so I think these would be a good read! Buy them on Amazon: 1, 2. You can read Vol. 1 online for free here.
Look at this list of personal recommendations. Here’s a little list of albums and links to them that I think make great starter metal music. Most of these are basic metal knowledge-type bands, others I threw in because I think they’d still be good for new people.
